The Core Classes

PetSmart dog training class path from Puppy or Beginner to Advanced and specialty classes with prices

PetSmart’s four core classes build on each other. You start with Puppy or Beginner, depending on your dog’s age, and move up from there.

Puppy Training

Puppy Training is for dogs from 10 weeks to 5 months old. It covers basic skills, communication and socialization, including leash manners and tips for barking and nipping.

The real value is time around new people and dogs during the window when puppies learn the most. Our puppy classes guide covers schedules and what to expect week by week.

Beginner Training

Beginner Training is for dogs 5 months and older and has no prerequisite. It teaches communication and tackles common problems, with skills like leash manners and leave it.

This is the right start for most adopted adult dogs. Even a dog that knows a few cues benefits from learning one consistent system with you.

Intermediate Training

Intermediate builds on the basics so they hold up in real life. Skills include heel, stay and place, and you need Puppy or Beginner first.

For most family dogs, this is the class that makes the biggest everyday difference. A stay that works in a busy store tends to work at home too.

Advanced Training

Advanced strengthens reliability and teaches more complex skills for different situations. Intermediate is the prerequisite.

Owners who enjoy training or are aiming for therapy work get the most from it. Many household dogs do fine stopping after Intermediate.

Specialty Classes

Once your dog has the basics, PetSmart offers three specialty classes at select stores. Each runs six weeks.

ClassPricePrerequisite
Trick Training$149Puppy or Beginner
Brain Games Training$159Intermediate
Therapy Dog Training$179Advanced

Brain Games uses mental stimulation to help with hyperactivity and boredom. Therapy Dog Training prepares you and your dog to take a therapy dog evaluation.

Trick Training builds communication and your bond through fun tricks. Call your store to reserve a spot, since these fill up and aren’t offered everywhere.

Packages and How Much They Save

PackageIncludesPriceSavings
FundamentalPuppy or Beginner, plus Intermediate$249$49
AdvancedIntermediate plus Advanced$249$49
PremiumPuppy or Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced$355$92

The Fundamental Package is the best fit for most owners. It covers the two classes that matter most and saves $49 over buying them separately.

The Premium Package only pays off if you’ll finish all three levels, which takes about 18 weeks. If you’re unsure, start with the 2-class package.

Cost Per Session Compared

OptionPriceAbout per hour
Single 6-week class$149$25
Fundamental Package$249$21
Premium Package$355$20
Private 1-hour session$89$89
Four private sessions$259$65

Group classes cost far less per hour than private sessions. Packages lower the price further if you plan to keep going.

Private time costs more but focuses fully on your dog. Many owners do a group class first and add a private session for one stubborn problem.

Private Training Sessions

Private sessions are one-on-one with a trainer and built around your dog. They make sense when a group setting isn’t a good fit.

SessionPriceBest for
30-minute consultation$45Meeting the trainer and making a plan
1-hour session$89One or two specific behaviors
Four 1-hour sessions$259Several problems or new skills

Private training suits dogs that get overwhelmed around other dogs. It also helps owners whose schedules can’t fit the same hour each week.

Training Camp for PetsHotel Guests

Dogs staying at PetsHotel can add Training Camp, a 30-minute one-on-one session for manners and basic cues. It costs $45 for one, $149 for four or $239 for eight.

Training Camp is only for hotel guests, so call the store to reserve it with your stay. Our PetsHotel guide explains how stays work.

StartSmart Workshop and Free Consultation

The $25 StartSmart Training Workshop is a one-hour intro for new owners. It covers potty training, crate training, socialization and tips for visits to the vet or groomer.

PetSmart also offers a free 15-minute consultation with an accredited trainer. It’s a no-cost way to find the right class before you pay.

What Happens in a Class

Group classes are one hour long and meet at the same time each week for six weeks in a row. Days and times vary by store.

Typical flow of a PetSmart group training session

Sessions mix practice in the training area with time on the store floor. Carts, people and other dogs give real-world practice you can’t get at home.

PetSmart says classes typically have 4 to 6 dogs, depending on the class, time and training area size. If you miss a week, work with your trainer on a make-up session.

Requirements Before Your First Class

Every dog gets a hands-on assessment from a safety-certified associate at check-in. Staff note any health or behavior concerns and talk them through with you.

RequirementDetails
Age10 weeks to 5 months for Puppy, 5 months and up for Beginner
DPP with adenovirusDistemper, parvovirus and parainfluenza, 1 or 3-year vaccine
Rabies1 or 3-year vaccine, when age appropriate
Vaccine timingAt least 48 hours before the session
ProofWritten records before or at the first class

Local rules can add more, so confirm with your store. If shots are due, PetSmart’s vaccination clinics are a low-cost way to catch up.

What to Bring

Checklist of what to bring to a PetSmart dog training class

Pack more treats than you think you’ll need. Small, soft treats that your dog loves work best when the store is full of distractions.

Practicing Between Classes

One hour a week isn’t enough on its own. Short practice sessions at home are what make the cues stick.

  • Train for 5 minutes, two or three times a day
  • Practice in different rooms, then the yard, then on walks
  • Reward right away so your dog links the treat to the behavior
  • End each session on a success, even an easy one
  • Write down questions to ask the trainer next week

Keep the same words and hand signals the trainer uses. Mixing cues between family members is a common reason progress stalls.

Dog weaving through agility poles during training

Once the basics are solid, games like fetch with a sit-wait or hide and seek with a recall turn training into play. Mental work tires dogs out as much as a long walk.

Practice Trips to the Store

PetSmart welcomes leashed, well-behaved pets in its stores, which makes it a handy place to practice between classes. Short visits at quiet times build focus around carts and strangers.

Keep early trips brief and leave before your dog gets overwhelmed. Our guide to bringing your dog inside PetSmart covers the store rules.

The Satisfaction Policy

PetSmart lets you retake a class within 90 days if you’re not satisfied. Prorated refunds are available until the start of the second session of a 6-week class or a 4-pack of private sessions.

Raise concerns with your trainer early rather than after the last class. If the trainer is the issue, ask whether another store’s class can be used for the retake.

Who Teaches the Classes

Classes are taught by PetSmart Accredited Pet Trainers who use positive reinforcement. The accreditation comes from PetSmart’s own program, not an outside credential like CPDT-KA.

Teaching style varies from store to store. Watching part of a class at your store before you sign up tells you a lot about the trainer.

Is PetSmart Training Worth It?

For new puppies and everyday manners, a $149 class is good value, especially with the 90-day retake policy. Group classes also give socialization that private lessons can’t.

  • Best for puppies, newly adopted adult dogs and first-time owners
  • Good for owners who want structure and weekly accountability
  • Not right for aggression, resource guarding or severe anxiety

Serious behavior problems need a veterinary behaviorist or a certified behavior consultant. A group class in a busy store can make those dogs more stressed.

High-energy dogs often do well pairing classes with Doggie Day Camp for extra exercise and play.
