Banfield at PetSmart: Services, Prices, Wellness Plans
The vet hospital inside many PetSmart stores is Banfield Pet Hospital, a separate company with its own prices and wellness plans. You can book a visit without a plan, or pay monthly for an Optimum Wellness Plan that bundles routine care.
Plans suit some pets far better than others. Here’s what Banfield costs and how to decide.
| Quick fact | Details |
|---|---|
| Who runs it | Banfield Pet Hospital, part of Mars Veterinary Health |
| Office visit without a plan | $84.95 at Banfield’s Portland hospital |
| Wellness plans | Start as low as about $26.95 a month, per Banfield |
| Contract | 12 months, paid yearly or monthly |
| Treats points | Not earned or redeemed on vet services |
What Banfield Is
Banfield is a full-service veterinary hospital chain, and many of its hospitals sit inside PetSmart stores. It’s a separate business from PetSmart, which is why your Treats Rewards points don’t apply there.

Banfield handles general practice care like exams, vaccines, dental cleanings, lab work, sick visits and routine surgery. It isn’t an emergency hospital, so save an after-hours emergency vet’s number too.
Not every PetSmart has a Banfield. Use Banfield’s location finder before you go.
Banfield or a Vaccine Clinic?
Some PetSmart stores also host walk-in vaccine clinics. They’re cheaper for shots alone but can’t treat a sick pet.
| Your need | Better choice |
|---|---|
| Routine shots only | Walk-in vaccine clinic |
| A sick or injured pet | Banfield |
| Dental cleaning or surgery | Banfield |
| An ongoing vet relationship | Banfield, with records at every hospital |
Our vaccination clinic guide compares clinic package prices.
Your First Visit
Bring any previous vet records, a list of medications and your pet on a leash or in a carrier. Dogs and cats should be secured until you’re inside the exam room.
The vet does a full exam and talks through recommended care. If you’re considering a plan, this is when your pet’s eligibility is confirmed.
Ask for a written estimate before any test or treatment. Banfield’s front desks can print one, so you’re never surprised at checkout.
Banfield Prices Without a Plan
Anyone can book a Banfield visit without enrolling. Banfield publishes estimated prices for each hospital, and an office visit fee is charged for every visit, including vaccine-only appointments.

Prices vary by hospital. The Little Rock, Arkansas hospital, for example, listed a dental cleaning at $387.95 compared with $465.95 in Portland.
Cat prices without a plan
| Cat service at Portland | Price |
|---|---|
| Office visit | $84.95 |
| FVRCP vaccine | $35.68 |
| Feline leukemia vaccine | $38.44 |
| Rabies vaccine | $30.19 |
| Neuter, over 6 months | $300.95 |
| Spay, over 6 months | $407.95 |
Banfield’s price pages were last updated in May 2025, so confirm current prices with your hospital before booking.
Surgery and Dental Prices
Banfield’s anesthetic procedures include routine bloodwork, an IV catheter and fluids, and anesthesia monitoring. Some pets need extra anesthesia or lab work at additional cost.

Our spay and neuter cost guide and teeth cleaning cost guide list these prices in full.
Optimum Wellness Plans
Banfield’s Optimum Wellness Plans are year-long packages of preventive care. Every plan includes unlimited office visits, comprehensive exams, routine vaccines and 24/7 Pet Chat in most states.

Puppy and kitten plans are only for pets under six months old. The Banfield veterinarian confirms which plan your pet qualifies for at the first visit.
Plans aren’t pet insurance. They don’t pay for accidents or illness treatment, though plan members get a discount on most extra care.
What Plans Include
| Included in most plans | Details |
|---|---|
| Unlimited office visits | No exam fee, even for sick visits |
| Dog vaccines | Rabies, distemper/parvo, Bordetella, leptospirosis and Lyme |
| Cat vaccines | Rabies, FVRCP and feline leukemia |
| Diagnostic testing | Varies by plan, from fecal tests to senior bloodwork |
| Parasite screening and deworming | Especially for puppies and kittens |
| Pet Chat and virtual visits | Available in most states |
Services outside your plan get a 5% to 15% discount, depending on the plan. Therapeutic diets and PetSmart services or merchandise are excluded.
The Banfield Access Plan
Banfield also offers a simpler, budget-friendly Banfield Access Plan. It includes unlimited office visits, two comprehensive exams a year, an annual heartworm test and a 5% discount on most products and services.
It suits owners who want easy access to a vet without the full vaccine and testing package.
Senior Pets at Banfield
Senior Care plans add diagnostics that help catch age-related problems early. Banfield lists bloodwork, urine testing, blood pressure checks, thyroid screening and X-rays among them.
Senior Care Plus adds a yearly dental cleaning on top. Older pets often need dental care most, so this tier can pay for itself.
Customizing a Plan
Plans are set packages, but Banfield offers discounted add-ons like parasite control. You can add their cost to your monthly payments.
Banfield usually suggests switching plans at renewal. Talk to your vet if your pet’s needs change mid-year.
Plan Costs and Payments
Banfield says plans start as low as $26.95 a month, and costs vary by plan, pet and location. Ask your hospital for the exact price before enrolling.
You can pay once for the year or choose 12 monthly payments with AutoPay. Monthly plans renew automatically each year unless you turn off renewal.
Monthly payments can be set for the 5th, 12th, 19th or 26th of the month. Banfield’s pages describe an enrollment fee differently in different places, so ask whether one applies and whether it can be waived.
The Math for a Puppy
The first year of a puppy’s life packs in exams, a vaccine series, deworming and often a spay or neuter. Early Care Plus bundles all of that, including the surgery.
| Puppy care at Portland retail prices | Cost |
|---|---|
| Several office visits at $84.95 each | About $255 to $340 |
| Puppy vaccine series | About $150 to $250 |
| Neuter under 6 months | $467.95 |
| Fecal tests and deworming | Extra |
That easily tops $900 before extras. For most puppies, a plan that includes the surgery comes out ahead.
The Math for a Kitten
Kitten Early Care plans include regular checkups, the vaccine series, FeLV and FIV testing, parasite screening and deworming. Early Care Plus adds a spay or neuter.
At Portland’s listed prices, a kitten spay under 6 months is $346.95 and a neuter is $241.95. Add several office visits and vaccines, and the first year quickly passes $600.
As with puppies, a plan that includes the surgery is usually the better deal for a kitten’s first year. Our cat adoption guide covers what adoption fees already include.
The Math for a Healthy Adult Dog
For a healthy adult dog with one routine visit a year, paying as you go can cost less. At Portland’s listed prices, an exam plus five common vaccines comes to about $267, before heartworm and fecal tests.
If a plan cost $40 a month, that’s $480 for the year. It would only pay off if your dog needed extra visits, tests or a dental cleaning.
Active Care Plus changes the math because it includes a yearly dental cleaning worth $387.95 to $465.95 at the hospitals we checked. Our teeth cleaning guide explains when dogs need one.
Pet Chat and Virtual Visits
Plan members can message a veterinary professional through Pet Chat 24 hours a day, in most states. It’s useful for deciding whether a symptom can wait until morning.
Plans also include virtual visits for follow-ups from home. They save a trip when your vet just needs to check on progress.
Getting the Most From a Plan
- Book your first visit soon after enrolling
- Use every included vaccine, test and exam
- Bring your pet in for any new concern, since office visits are included
- Ask for the plan discount on medications and parasite control
- Review the plan at renewal and switch tiers if needed
Owners who use their plan fully tend to see the biggest savings. Those who skip included services often pay more than they would per visit.
Canceling a Plan Early
Plans are 12-month contracts. If you cancel early, Banfield charges whichever is less, either your remaining payments or the retail value of services used minus what you’ve paid.
For example, say you’re six months into a $45 plan and have paid $270. If your pet used services worth $600 at retail, the difference is $330, so you’d pay the remaining $270 instead.
Plan cancellations and questions go to 888-649-2716 by phone or text. Mark your renewal date on a calendar when you enroll, so you can decide in time.
Is a Plan Right for You?
| A plan often makes sense if | Paying per visit may be better if |
|---|---|
| You have a puppy or kitten under 6 months | Your adult pet is healthy and rarely sick |
| Your pet needs yearly dental cleanings | Your pet has good teeth |
| You like to see the vet for every concern | You only visit once a year |
| You want predictable monthly costs | You’d rather pay as you go |
Run the numbers with your hospital’s prices before signing. The right answer depends on how much care your pet really uses.
Questions to Ask Before Enrolling
- What’s the exact monthly price for my pet’s plan?
- Is there an enrollment or set-up fee, and can it be waived?
- Which vaccines, tests and visits are included?
- What discount applies to care outside the plan?
- When does the plan renew, and how do I turn off renewal?
Get the answers in writing, and keep a copy of the signed plan agreement.
Other Vet Options Inside PetSmart
Banfield isn’t the only vet provider in PetSmart stores. Some stores host PetSmart Veterinary Services hospitals, which are independently owned, and walk-in vaccine clinics.
Availability depends on your store. Our vaccination clinic guide explains the different providers.
Paying for Care Outside a Plan
When your pet needs something a plan doesn’t cover, you pay for it separately, usually with your plan discount applied. Banfield asks plan members to keep a card on file for these extras.
Banfield accepts most pet insurance plans, so an insured pet can still claim on covered treatment after the visit.
Wellness Plan or Pet Insurance?
A wellness plan prepays predictable routine care. Pet insurance reimburses unexpected costs like surgery after an accident or treatment for a serious illness.
Banfield accepts most pet insurance plans, and many owners carry both. Our pet insurance guide compares options.
Booking and Moving
You can book online, in the Banfield app or by calling your hospital. Plan members can visit any Banfield hospital nationwide and request a specific vet.
Records follow your pet between hospitals, which helps if you move. If you just adopted, check your paperwork for a free first visit offer from Banfield.
