PetSmart Return Policy 2026 – How Long It Takes?
PetSmart receipts are valid for 60 days from purchase, and within that window you get a full refund to your original payment method. There’s no hard cutoff for in-store returns: past 60 days, or with no receipt at all, you can still return items with valid ID for a merchandise return card.

What Is the PetSmart Return Window?
Most people believe PetSmart has a 60-day return deadline. What the policy actually says is that receipts are valid for 60 days. Inside that window you get a full refund to your original payment method. Outside it, you can still return in store with valid ID, you just receive a merchandise return card at the item’s most recent sale price instead of cash back.
The one firm cutoff is mail: purchases older than 60 days can’t be returned by post.
Can You Return Items Without a Receipt?
Yes. Bring the product in new or salable condition plus a valid government-issued ID to any store, and PetSmart issues a merchandise return card for the item’s most recent sale amount. That card works for future in-store purchases only. It can’t be redeemed for cash or used on online orders.
If you paid by credit card, bring that card. Associates can often locate the transaction and refund it properly instead of issuing store credit.
Which Items Always Need a Receipt?
Receipt required at $10 or more
- Electronic merchandise including collars, fencing and training items
- Grooming tools
- Filters and pumps
- Non-prescription pet medication and vitamins
- ThunderShirts and calming products
- All flea and tick products
For these categories the no-receipt route doesn’t exist. Any service booked online also requires a receipt to return.
Can You Return Opened Food or Used Items?
The written policy requires items to be in new or salable condition with original packaging, and doesn’t specifically address opened pet food. In practice, stores commonly accept a partly used bag when a pet refused to eat it, often as an exchange or store credit rather than a full refund. Bring the bag with as much product left as possible, and expect the decision to sit with the store.
How Do Online Order Returns Work?
Online orders return free to any store. Bring the item in original packaging with your order confirmation, and you’ll be refunded the purchase price minus shipping, delivery fees and gift wrap. If you paid by credit card, bring that same card or you’ll get a merchandise return card instead.
Four purchase types can only be returned in store, never by mail: same-day delivery orders, in-store pickup orders, anything bought through a delivery provider app, and PetSmart services.
To return by mail, call Customer Care on 1-888-839-9638 for a shipping label. A return shipping fee comes out of your refund, original shipping charges aren’t refundable, and exchanges aren’t available by mail at all.
Can You Return Live Animals?
Live pets aren’t covered by the standard merchandise policy. Fish and small animals fall under a separate 14-day satisfaction guarantee instead, which has its own conditions including bringing a water sample for fish. Full rules are in our guide to the PetSmart fish return policy.
How Do Refunds Work by Payment Type?
| You paid with | You get back |
|---|---|
| Cash | Cash |
| Debit card | Cash |
| Credit card | Credit to the original card, or a merchandise return card |
| Check | Merchandise card, or cash after a 10-day wait from the sale date |
| Gift card | Merchandise return card |
| PayPal or other non-card method | Merchandise return card |
The debit rule surprises people: a debit purchase comes back as cash at the register, not as a credit to your account.
What PetSmart Won’t Take Back
Prescription medications can’t be returned or exchanged under any circumstances, in store or by mail. Special orders can’t be returned in store and have to go back by mail. Anything not in salable condition or missing its original packaging may be refused.

PetSmart also states it reserves the right to limit returns regardless of receipt. Frequent no-receipt returns of high-value items can get an account flagged.
Do You Lose Treats Points on a Return?
Yes, both ways. Points you redeemed toward the purchase are forfeited when you return the item, and points you earned on that transaction get deducted from your account. Worth checking before returning a large order you earned bonus points on. See our guide to PetSmart Treats Rewards.
How I Handle PetSmart Returns
Always in store, even for online orders. You skip the shipping deduction, you can exchange on the spot, and mail returns don’t allow exchanges anyway. Keep receipts for anything in the flea, grooming tool or electronics categories over $10, because those are the only items where losing the receipt genuinely costs you the return.
